How to Get the Best Black Friday / Cyber Monday TV Deal

So, you have your heart set on a new TV this year? Well, Black Friday and Cyber Monday offer some of the best deals you’ll get on this big purchase. Here’s what you need to know.

You Can Save a Lot

TV deals can be anywhere from $50 to $300 off the regular price. You may also get extra bang for your buck from bundles, in-store rewards programs, or price matching.

Watch Early Sales

Sales are starting now. There are a few factors at play. One, retailers know that TVs are big- ticket items for Black Friday so they like to showcase their potential deals. Two, there are still supply chain issues, so there’s a bit of incentive to clear inventories.

Check Every Day

Some stores offer different deals every day. Best Buy, for example, has already announced that they’re doing this. So, if you have your eye on a specific model, checking every day in the lead-up to Black Friday and Cyber Monday may be a good strategy.

Understand Derivative & Store Models

A derivative model TV is a version of a more popular model with fewer features made specifically for times like Black Friday. Stores can offer deeper discounts on derivative models because they cost less to make.

You can spot a derivative model because they’ll have a slightly different product name. For example, if you want to buy a BRAND NAME 4K (45TK23), the derivative model might be BRAND NAME 4K (45TK23-B).

The other way to spot a derivative model is by checking the features. The model you want may offer three HDMI ports, but the derivative may only have one.

A store model TV is basically the same thing as a derivative, but it’s made for a specific store. Costco, for example, gets a lot of TVs made specifically for them.

This isn’t to say that derivatives are bad, just that you should be aware of them. Consumer Reports has stated that their testing doesn’t see the difference between derivatives and regular models. In the above example, both TVs would offer 4K resolution. The derivative model just offers fewer bells and whistles. If you have no use for three HDMI ports and can live with just one, the derivative model would save you lots of money. In fact, derivatives and store models can offer some of the very best savings. However, it’s easy to confuse a derivative model with a regular model, so be careful in your research.

Use Shopping Apps

Apps such as Honey, Rakuten, and ShopSavvy, along with sites such as Best Black Friday, Deal News, and DealsPlus can offer you deals, easy price comparison, and more. Use them while shopping.

Think Hard About Compromise

You’ll probably have your TV for at least five years. It’s a big expense that doesn’t get replaced often. So don’t compromise for something that’ll annoy you down the road. If you know you need a set with at least two HDMI ports, one for your cable box and one for your PlayStation, then it might not be worth saving $50 by getting a set with just one HDMI port.

Don’t Skimp on Stands & Wall Mounts

Don’t try to save big money on your TV stand or wall mount. Get something well-reviewed that fits your TV’s weight and specs. Saving an extra 30% on a wall mount rated 20 pounds under what you need won’t seem like such a savings when your TV drops off the wall.

Beware the Cheapest Deal

The very cheapest TVs out there—the ones that are running for a hundred bucks—are frequently not the great deals they seem. Black Friday is a great opportunity for stores to get rid of old stock that might be last year’s model.
